He has been called \u201cthe most eminent unknown Canadian writer alive\u201d (<em>Maclean\u2019s Magazine, The National Post<\/em>). But for sheer over-the-top hyperbole, nothing beats the opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quillandquire.com\/blog\/index.php\/books-year\/books-of-the-year-2013-fiction\/attachment\/savagelove\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent piece about him in <em>Quill and Quire<\/em> in Toronto<\/a>, which elevates his lack of celebrity to the epic: &#8220;Certain mysteries abide in this world: the Gordian Knot, the Holy Trinity, and the literary obscurity of Douglas Glover.&#8221; Luckily, he owns a dog and is not completely alone in the world. And occasionally someone actually reads what he writes: He has also been called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203550304577138892700746530.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a master of narrative structure<\/a>\u201d (<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>) and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/arts\/books-and-media\/globe-books-2013-long-story-short-it-was-a-remarkable-year-for-short-fiction\/article16116522\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mad genius of Can Lit<\/a>&#8221; (<em>Globe and Mail<\/em>) whose stories are &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/lareviewofbooks.org\/review\/an-anatomy-of-story-douglas-glovers-savage-love\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as radiant and stirring as anything available in contemporary literature<\/a>\u201d (<em>Los Angeles Review of Books<\/em>) and whose work &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/musicandliterature.org\/2013\/10\/22\/savage-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demands comparison to [Cormac] McCarthy, Barry Hannah, Donald Barthelme, William Faulkner<\/a>\u201d (<em>Music &amp; Literature<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Glover is the author of five story collections, four novels, three books of essays, and <a href=\"https:\/\/douglasglover.net\/?page_id=215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Enamoured Knight<\/em><\/a>, a book about <em>Don Quixote<\/em> and novel form. His new essay collection <a href=\"https:\/\/douglasglover.net\/?page_id=7625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Erotics of Restraint: Essays on Literary Form<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is just out (2019). In 2007, he was given the Writers&#8217; Trust of Canada Timothy Findley Award for an author in mid-career. His novel <a href=\"https:\/\/douglasglover.net\/?page_id=110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Elle<\/em><\/a> won the 2003 Governor-General\u2019s Award for Fiction, was a finalist for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and was optioned by Isuma Igloolik Productions, makers of <em>Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner<\/em>. <em>Elle<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/douglasglover.net\/?page_id=7361\">adapted for the stage by the actress Severn Thompson<\/a> and premiered at Toronto&#8217;s Theatre Passe Muraille in January, 2016. Glover&#8217;s story collection <a href=\"https:\/\/douglasglover.net\/?page_id=120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Guide to Animal Behaviour<\/em><\/a> was a finalist for the 1991 Governor-General\u2019s Award. His stories have been frequently anthologized, notably in <em>The Best American Short Stories<\/em>, <em>Best Canadian Stories<\/em>, and <em>The New Oxford Book of Canadian Stories<\/em>. He was the subject of a TV documentary in a series called <em>The Writing Life<\/em> and a collection of critical essays, <a href=\"https:\/\/douglasglover.net\/?page_id=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Art of Desire, The Fiction of Douglas Glover<\/em><\/a>, edited by Bruce Stone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Glover\u00a0was the publisher and editor of the monthly magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/numerocinqmagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Num\u00e9ro Cinq<\/em><\/a>\u00a0from 2010 to 2017. He has taught at several institutions of higher learning but mostly wishes he hadn&#8217;t. For two years, 1994 and 1995, he produced and hosted <em>The Book Show<\/em>, a weekly half-hour literary interview program which originated at WAMC in Albany and was syndicated on various public radio stations and around the world on Voice of America.
